Communication is one of the most important skills to learn for human beings, no matter how it is conducted. Today’s students are the masters of communication both formally and informally. One of the most important venues for formal communication is at a conference, especially international conferences for undergraduate students. There are many benefits, both globally and individually, of attending a conference. Not only do you further your education, but you also learn how to talk to people from diverse backgrounds.
Many clashes of civilizations have happened because of different ways of thinking, and because the time allocated for communication was not sufficient. International student conferences can provide a way of decreasing these kinds of international tensions, making the world a better place. That’s the benefit for our global society, but what about the individual benefits of attending a student conference? Why should students regardless of what they are studying be interested in interacting with others in their field?
“Student conferences can not only open doors to your career, but also open your eyes to future opportunities, new cultures, and international perspectives.”
I’ll tell you. Although my experience in international conferences is not much, I can honestly say that they have opened my eyes to things I never knew before about the world. I used to think that the geography and culture of a country didn’t matter, and couldn’t affect the way people think about an issue, but it actually does. If we could learn to communicate with people of different backgrounds, it could also enrich our own ways of thinking, making us both wiser and better people.
International conferences are also good for our career in the future. In the Harvard Business Review, it is said that people with international experience are more likely to create new businesses and products and to be promoted. I couldn’t agree more.
In my point of view—as a student from a third world country – another benefit of attending a conference is the chance to go abroad with all expenses paid. In my university it is not difficult to get a private company to become our sponsor. It would be fun to visit another country, but it is quite expensive to go overseas. Student conferences can not only open doors to your career, but also open your eyes to future opportunities, new cultures, and international perspectives.
Actually there are so many other benefits beside the ones I’ve mentioned, but the only way to know the rest of the benefits is by attending a conference, and you’ll understand what I mean. So what are you waiting for?
